What SEO costs across the UK market

If you are collecting quotes, this is roughly how they break down and what each band can realistically deliver for a small business.

Under £250 a month

Avoid

At this price nobody can afford to spend real hours on your site. Expect automated audits, directory submissions and a monthly PDF. This is where most "SEO does not work" stories start.

£400 to £800 a month

Where most small businesses sit

Enough for genuine technical work, a steady flow of pages and local SEO for one or two towns. This is the realistic entry point for a single-location small business that wants results rather than activity.

£800 to £2,000 a month

Competitive markets

Needed if you are up against established competitors, cover several towns, or sell services where one customer is worth thousands. Buys more content, link work and conversion work.

£2,500 and up

Usually beyond a small business

Agency retainers at this level are built for companies with a marketing department. If you are being quoted this for a two-van business, ask exactly how many hours a month you are getting.

Questions worth asking any SEO quote

  • • How many hours a month am I actually buying?
  • • Who does the work, and will I ever speak to them?
  • • Which specific searches are we targeting, and what is the monthly search volume?
  • • What happens to the pages and content if I leave?
  • • What is the notice period, and is there a minimum term?

SEO pricing questions

How much should a small business spend on SEO per month in the UK?

Between £400 and £800 a month covers a single-location small business properly. Between £800 and £2,000 is normal for competitive markets or several locations. The number that matters more is what a customer is worth to you: if one job is worth £2,000, a £799 plan needs to produce one extra job every couple of months to be ahead.

Why is SEO priced monthly rather than as a one-off?

Because rankings are not built once. Competitors publish, Google updates its systems, and pages need refreshing. A one-off project can fix your technical foundations and build your core pages, and I do take on one-off audits, but holding a ranking is ongoing work.

Is there a setup fee?

No. The first month costs the same as every other month, even though it is the heaviest one because of the audit, the keyword mapping and the initial fixes.

What about a contract or minimum term?

Month to month with 30 days notice. I would rather earn the next month. That said, judging SEO after four weeks is not fair to either of us: six months is the honest window for a real assessment.

Do you offer pay on results or a ranking guarantee?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. Nobody controls Google. Guarantees are normally written around terms so specific that ranking for them proves nothing, or they push the SEO towards short-term tactics that get sites penalised.

What is not included in the monthly price?

Paid advertising budget, website rebuilds, and third-party tools you might want in your own name. If a job needs a developer beyond the fixes I can make myself, I will tell you before anything is commissioned.

Not sure which plan you need?

Send the form and I will tell you which level your business actually needs, including if that is the cheapest one or none at all. The audit that comes back is free either way.

  • You get a document, not a sales call. Written findings you can act on yourself or hand to another agency.

  • Replies within two working days. It is me reading your form, so I only take on a few audits a week.

  • No contract, no cold calls. Your details are used to answer your enquiry and nothing else.
